Our Story
From a beat-up truck to Rotorua's favourite feed
Hāngi & Hops started in 2020 when Wiremu and Jade Tūhoe bought a beat-up truck off Trade Me and spent six months converting it. Wiremu grew up cooking hāngi with his whānau in Ōhinemutu, and Jade had been home-brewing for years. The idea was simple: take the flavours of a proper hāngi — smoky, earthy, slow-cooked — and serve them out of a window with a cold craft beer. They launched at the Rotorua Night Market and sold out in two hours. Three years on, they're at every market, festival, and rugby game in the Bay of Plenty.
- Real hāngi flavours, street-food speed
- Local craft beer on tap, always cold
- All packaging is compostable
Reviews
Word on the street
"Best hāngi burger in the country. Wiremu's brisket is insane — 12 hours smoked and it just falls apart. And the rewena bun? Chef's kiss. We drive from Tauranga for this."
Rangi P.
"Took the kids to the night market and they demolished the kūmara fries. We had the full hāngi plate between us and it was unreal. Proper kai."
Emma & Steve L.
"The pork belly bao is addictive. And the fact that everything's in compostable packaging — love that. These guys are the real deal."
Sarah T.
"Had them cater our work function and they absolutely smashed it. 60 people fed, everyone raving, and the craft beer selection was perfect. Will book again."
Dave M.
